Earlier on in the transfer window, it looked for all the world that Anthony Martial would be departing Old Trafford before the transfer window slammed shut.
During the World Cup, things went rather quiet in that regard. To my surprise, the 22-year-old returned for pre-season training with the rest of the lads. The Frenchman is currently out in the United States for the Red Devils’ tour matches.
Jose Mourinho met the media yesterday, and gave us the clearest indication yet that the former AS Monaco man will remain at the Theatre of Dreams beyond this summer; with his manager confirming he plans to start the season with Martial up front.
“It is important to work with Juan Mata, Alexis and Anthony Martial, who we think are the players we have for the start of the season.” Mourinho told reporters, including the Daily Express.
“There is no [Romelu] Lukaku, [Marcus] Rashford or [Jesse] Lingard.”
Although it’s tough that we’ll be starting the season without some important players, it does provide an opportunity for others. On paper, a trio of Juan Mata, Alexis Sanchez and Martial is outstanding in it’s own right, and the tour will no doubt help their relationship both on and off the pitch.
Martial will get his chance to show his capabilities. Now, there is absolutely no room for any more excuses. He has to be on his A-game from the first minute against Leicester City on August 10th. If he isn’t, then the Frenchman will only have himself to blame.
