Manchester United’s pre-season tour continued on Sunday evening, with a rather convincing 3-0 victory over Valerenga. Jose Mourinho must have been impressed with the overall performance of his players, with the Premier League campaign drawing ever closer.
Of course, we all know that the Red Devils have made two major signings in the window thus far, with the gaffer adding both Romelu Lukaku and Victor Lindelof to the playing squad. The duo have acquitted themselves very well to date, and it looks as though another new face could be on the way.
There have been strong rumours regarding a move for Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic, and after the game, Mourinho finally spoke out about the prospect of signing him.
The boss confirmed that the Serbia star wants the move to happen, before hinting that the number 31 jersey is a free number – and a leaked photo that appeared online may well be genuine.
I’m waiting for news,” Mourinho is quoted as saying by the Manchester Evening News. “I know that he wants that very, very much and when a player wants very, very much the chance is bigger, the chance is bigger, so I think we have a chance but in football until it’s official, I saw so many things happen that I refuse to say more than I am telling you now.”
“I don’t know because I was not there. Number 31 is a free number. It was Schweinsteiger. It’s a free jersey, we have a few free and 31 is one of them.”
This would be a stunning piece of transfer business. Manchester United have been in desperate need of a player who’ll just sit in front of the back four and do a job. Matic loves to do the dirty work, and he’ll bring that extra protection, allowing the likes of Paul Pogba to bomb forward and do what they do best.
It’s now down to Edward Woodward to keep working on the transfer – and get it signed and sealed as soon as possible so Matic can get used to life at Manchester United before the season starts.
