I think it’s fair to say that the overriding feeling when Marouane Fellaini signed a new contract was one of disappointment.
Personally, I’ve always liked having the big Belgium international around. He brings something different to the table. Particularly in those tricky, tight-knit away matches where it’s harder to play your natural game.
Fellaini made his first start of the season against Burnley at Turf Moor during the 2-0 victory this afternoon. It was an excellent performance, particularly defensively, with the midfielder winning absolutely everything that went his way.
Following the game, Fellaini earned high praise from his manager. No doubt that’ll be a further confidence booster as we head into he international break.
“He (Fellaini) is our best player in the air. Not just for us, maybe one of the best in the Premier League.” Mourinho is quoted as saying.
What’s frustrating is that the media are always quick to critique Mourinho when he does something wrong, but they’re never willing to praise him for aiding with player development. Fellaini is a huge success story of his, today is further proof to that.
The manager didn’t rush the midfielder back into proceedings. Instead, he gave him time to recover from his participation in the World Cup, now we’ll witness Fellaini at his best rather than having to endure one or two poor performances.
That sound you can hear is a load of angry reds backtracking on the fact that they were disappointed when Fellaini put pen to paper on a new Old Trafford deal…
In all seriousness, well done Fellaini, keep silencing those doubters!
