Jose Mourinho explains why Anthony Martial hasn’t been playing recently

Manchester United Football Club have a huge squad at their disposal, with Jose Mourinho having to utilise that to the fullest recently, due to our participation in multiple tournaments. One man who hasn’t played all that often is Anthony Martial.

As we all know, the Frenchman absolutely burst onto the scene last year with some wonderful performances. He was a mainstay in Louis van Gaal’s starting line-up, and Martial repaid that faith in the manager with an abundance of goals.

However, this year, Martial has drifted in and out of the team and recently, we’ve barely seen the 21-year-old start a match. Now the self-proclaimed Special One has explained why. When asked about the absence of our #11, the gaffer responded:

“I have to go in the direction of the players, but they also have to go in my direction,” Mourinho responded, as per Sky Sports News.

“Since September, Rashford has not scored in the Premier League, but he was always a player I chose. He was always a player I support because he was always coming in my direction and giving me what I want, so it is about that.”

“Do I think Anthony is a player with great potential? Yes. Do I think he can play successfully for me? Yes.”

“But he needs to give me things that I like.”

Once again, I think this is a direct message to the young man. Mourinho obviously believes he must improve, or at the very least, begin to adapt to a change in tactics. I have absolutely no problem with that.

You don’t become the most successful manager in recent years by giving player’s an easy time, and that’s all part and parcel of the modern day game. Mourinho knows exactly what he wants, and one way or another he will get it.

What’s good for Martial is the fact that Mourinho ends by reaffirming his faith in the forward. I guess it’s just going to take a little patience whilst he learns to adapt, and hopefully, we’ll see him back at his brilliant best next season.
