Manchester United Football Club have been struggling, with the midfield becoming more of a problem as the season goes on. That shouldn’t be the case at all, however, particularly after Jose Mourinho made the move to bring in £50million+ signing Fred over the summer.
The Brazil international started the season in the team, however, after a couple of poor performances, the former Shakhtar Donetsk man found himself on the bench. What’s concerning to me is the fact that he has barely had an opportunity to win his place back. When the likes of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic are playing so poorly.
Before the game against Fulham tomorrow, Mourinho has met the media and amongst the topic of conversations was why Fred hasn’t been involved in the starting line-up recently. His answer is somewhat surprising to me…
“Step by step,” Jose told the media, including ManUtd.com.
“You also have other players at other clubs that needed their time and you have some of them that play even less than what Fred is playing.
“I think Fred [will play more], when the team is defensively stronger and doesn’t need in midfield people that are more worried about giving some balance to the team than being involved in creation and attacking dynamics. The day we are stronger defensively, I think the horizons for Fred change completely
Honestly, I think this is just a cop-out of a response. If you spend more time on the front-foot, then the team wouldn’t have to be so reliant on defence. Just look at Manchester City, they’re hardly water-tight, yet it doesn’t matter as much because they enjoy so much possession. Fred would help in that regard.
When he has played, I like the look of his energy, on-ball ability, desire to get forward and toughness to do the dirty work, too… Let’s be real here, I don’t think he can do any worse, so why not give him his chance and see what he can do? All he needs is that little bit of consistency.
