Jose Mourinho explains why he rested Antonio Valencia against Blackburn

Manchester United Football Club have the games coming thick and fast right now, with Jose Mourinho having to work out which players need to be rested from time-to-time. The fact that the Red Devils are still in four competitions doesn’t make things any easier for our boss.

However, you have to give credit to the self-proclaimed Special One, who, so far, has gotten his team selection spot on more often than not; and it’s great to see.

After Manchester United narrowly overcame Blackburn, questions about rotation and resting players were raised. In particular, the media wondered where Antonio Valencia was this weekend, but Jose Mourinho had the perfect answer – and it is down to Ashley Young’s reliability at right-back.

“Some players, for example, Ashley Young, can I rest Antonio Valencia? Oh yes, I can if Ashley Young plays this way.” Jose Mourinho is quoted as saying by The Express.

“When I have people performing it is easier to make rotation.”

You have to give massive credit to Young. He’s so versatile and can play to an extremely high standard in multiple positions on the field. The way he slotted in at full-back this weekend was great, as it does give some much-needed rest to Antonio Valencia, who himself is playing wonderfully well right now.

On the back of that display, we could well see Ashley Young start again in the Europa League this midweek. Manchester United have a nice 3-0 lead, and it’d mean ‘Tony V’ will be 100% come the EFL Cup final on Sunday.
