Manchester United will be looking to take a real firm group of their Europa League group tomorrow evening, when they visit the hostile atmosphere of an away trip to Fenerbahce. The game itself won’t be easy, and the gaffer has given us a bit of early team news for the eagerly anticipated clash.
With Antonio Valencia set to be sidelined for quite a while, United’s coach confirmed the news that Matteo Darmian will continue in the right-back slot, and that the Italian has displayed some good form since coming back into the picture.
“He’s going to be out for a while but the main thing is that even when Antonio was playing very well, we were preparing Darmian and Darmian was having matches. He was playing against Feyenoord, Zorya and Fenerbahce. He was having minutes.” Jose Mourinho said when asked about Valencia’s injury.
“When in the last match we had to play Darmian for the first time in the Premier League, he was ready to answer the way he did it – playing really well in the last match against Burnley.”
“He’s ready to play tomorrow and to give continuity of the good work our right backs are doing in both competitions.” The manager concluded.
When United first signed the Italian international, he was simply brilliant to watch at times, and it felt like we’d acquired a top quality right-back. However, as last season progressed his form got worse, but him getting those regular starts could well do wonders for his confidence.
Going forward, he is a man you can trust in when morale is high, and you’d imagine a potentially tricky game against a Fenerbahce side won’t faze him in the slightest.
It’s now up to him to produce on the pitch, and if he does exactly that, Antonio Valencia will have a tough job wrestling the right-back starting slot off him come his return.
