Manchester United stuck four past a spirited Wigan Athletic team yesterday evening, as Jose Mourinho’s men ensured safe progression into the fifth round draw – which coincidentally takes place tonight. The gaffer named a much-changed starting XI, but one squad player missed out.
That man is Ashley Young, and the 31-year-old winger will obviously be disappointed, as he’d have been waiting for his chance in a game such as that one. Now, after the game, the manager has been speaking about the possibility of anymore outgoing transfers, and he did shed some light on Ashley Young’s situation.
“The only player that I am aware of a possibility to leave is Ashley Young – a player I would love to keep.” Jose Mourinho is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News.
“I am waiting for January 31 to know what is going on. I am not happy if he leaves, but he is the only player that I am informed has a possibility of leaving.”
“That is why he didn’t play and I gave chances to other people, because I don’t know if he is going to stay. If I could choose, definitely yes he would stay with us.”
At the end of the day, Young is 31 now, and he’s been brilliant for us whenever called upon. His versatility has been a huge asset during his stint at the Theatre of Dreams, and it would be gutting to see him leave – be it on loan or permanently.
However, as a professional footballer, you have to be playing regularly to maintain those high levels of fitness, and that’s a luxury that isn’t being afforded to the England international right now. If he wants to move away, you’d totally understand his reasoning and allow him to do so if you were the manager.
It is telling that Jose Mourinho does want him to stay, but he wouldn’t stand in his way if Young does find a deal that suits him elsewhere. He’ll have to act quick though, with just a couple of days remaining before the window slams shut.
