Manchester United’s first season under the watchful eye of Jose Mourinho is winding down to a close. The Red Devils have one trophy under their belt, whilst having one more to play for in Europe. However, their Premier League season is all-but over.
Top four is gone, and our Champions League hopes are now solely relying on whether we win the Europa League or not. Now, in a game against Ajax, that isn’t going to be easy in the slightest.
However, there is a silver lining to that. It means that some youngsters will get opportunities to prove their worth on the grandest of stages, which is obviously excellent for their progress and development as footballers.
Now, Jose Mourinho has let the cat out of the bag regarding one player he plans to hand some minutes to; Joel Pereira, our third choice goalkeeper.
This is a guy who is clearly highly regarded by the boss, because it’s not easy to get a chance to play whilst competing with the likes of two of the best in the business in the form of David de Gea and Sergio Romero.
“We need three good goalkeepers and we have them, but only two are experienced,” the Manchester United manager said, as per the Daily Telegraph.
“Joel is fantastic and I am going to give him a chance to play in the Premier League this season. I couldn’t be happier with the players we have for the position at the moment. We have the goalkeeper of the Spain national team in De Gea, the No1 goalkeeper in Argentina in Romero, and in Pereira we have a young boy that for me is soon going to be the Portuguese No1.”
Talk about high praise. He’s still so young and learning, and perhaps giving him a chance in our final home game of the season against Crystal Palace would make an awful lot of sense. At just 20, he still has a lot of developing to do, but it’s clear that in the long-run, this is a player who could be our first-choice.
