Manchester United’s full-back problems have been going on for years now. It’s an area of the field that Jose Mourinho has neglected somewhat, but perhaps that’s about to change.
Ashley Young was Raheem Sterling’s and Leroy Sane’s play-toy at times during the Manchester derby. Right-back is now the biggest area of need across the defence.
Both Young and Antonio Valencia are now 33. Their best years are behind them, that’s before you factor in that they’re both naturally wingers, not defenders, which explains an awful lot…
However, it looks as though the self-proclaimed Special One is going to make another big, team news decision in the not too distant future. Sports Mole cites reports from the Manchester Evening News, who are claiming that Mourinho is preparing to ‘unleash’ Diogo Dalot once he returns from injury.
The 19-year-old, who cost United £19million in the summer has only been used twice due to being sidelined. However, in both those games, the young man from Portugal was excellent.
I honestly thought that Dalot would have been given a year or two to fully settle in, but needs must, and we require him to be thrown into the deep-end almost immediately. Let’s be honest, he can’t do any worse than Young and Valencia, can he?
