Jose Mourinho reveals why Victor Lindelof wasn’t in the Man United squad vs West Ham

Manchester United Football Club kicked off 2017/18 in the best possible way. Jose Mourinho’s men ran rampant on an average West Ham United side, scoring four past The Hammers – with new striker Romelu Lukaku bagging an excellent brace.

The game as a whole was a real positive start by the Red Devils, and perhaps the most surprising aspect of the match was just how solid our defensive line looked.

All this came despite the fact that Victor Lindelof wasn’t even in the match day squad, which in itself, could have caused some concern for the Old Trafford faithful.

After the match, manager Mourinho explained why the one they call the ‘Iceman’ wasn’t involved at all. The Portuguese coach reiterated the point that the 23-year-old centre-back may need time to settle to life in England, before adding that when he signed Ricardo Carvalho, he also was given that luxury.

“I think Real Madrid was too early for him,” Mourinho said, as per The Independent. “He played because Jones and Bailly were both suspended.

“I’ve had players coming from different leagues to the Premier League and normally it’s not easy. The difference between Lukaku and Matic is that they have years and years [of experience in] the Premier League.

“I brought in 2004 a phenomenal central defender to England: Ricardo Carvalho. He was one of the best central defenders in the last decade of the Premier League, but he struggled.

“It was difficult for him to adapt in the beginning. I think Victor is a little bit of that and he’s going to have that time.”

The most heartening part about the interview is that Mourinho ended by saying he will get the time that he needs. There is no doubt that he is a talented man, and it is a huge step up moving from SL Benfica to Manchester United.

With every passing training session, he’ll be becoming more and more used to the physicality of the English game, and over time, I don’t doubt the fact that he will be a wonderful player for this football club.
