Manchester United came through their first pre-season game relatively unscathed with a win under their belts, and Mourinho seemed pleased afterwards. Our new boss was quick to hand praise to Axel Tuanzebe, who only had ten minutes to prove his worth.
The young centre-back looked calm and composed during his cameo, and wasn’t afraid to play the ball out from the back either.
When asked about Tuanzebe, Mourinho said:
“You can play 90 minutes or one minute, sometimes one minute is enough,” the United boss told MUTV.
“With Axel, 10 minutes is enough.”
“I only needed 10 minutes to know his potential, you can see it immediately.”
It’s clear that Tuanzebe has bags of potential, and can go an awful long way in the game if he keeps his head screwed on. His performances for the youth sides over the last twelve months certainly back that up, and with a shortage of centre-backs at the club at the moment, he may well get his chance.
He is only eighteen though, and that has to be taken into consideration. Defending is without doubt the hardest job in football, and usually, it’s rare to see players of eighteen take to the field as a centre-back in the Premier League.
