Manchester United secured a huge result at Old Trafford today, with Jose Mourinho getting one over on his old side, Chelsea.
The Red Devils went behind early on, but remained patient, controlled and kept working hard. Goals from Romelu Lukaku and Jesse Lingard ensured a vital three points, with manager Mourinho in buoyant mood during his post-match press conference.
Although the self-proclaimed Special One claimed he doesn’t like to single out one player, he did praise the ‘phenomenal’ Nemanja Matic, who comfortably enjoyed his best game of 2018
“I don’t like to individualise – I think [Nemanja] Matic was phenomenal, I think [Paul] Pogba played a fantastic game in our midfield.” Mourinho told reporters, including ManUtd.com.
“I could speak about my central defenders too and the guys in attack – the mission Alexis had, to be the third attacking player but at the same time the fourth midfield player to try to cover the area in front of Scott. I think everyone made a big effort.”
There was also praise for Paul Pogba, who had a brilliant second-half. Outside of the outstanding Lukaku, Matic was United’s second-best player on the day. He won tackles aplenty, used his physicality wonderfully and took control of the game as a true midfield enforcer.
It was wonderful to see as he’d look exhausted at times over the last few months, but a display like this will undoubtedly give him a new lease of life and a new-found confidence. We’ll certainly need more displays like this from now until the end of the season if we have any trophy aspirations.
