Manchester United’s preparations for a difficult trip to Everton away will be well underway at the moment, with Jose Mourinho’s side full of confidence after hammering West Ham United by a 4-1 scoreline in midweek. The gaffer decided to recall Bastian Schweinsteiger to the squad in that match.
Not only that though, the influential German midfielder made his way onto the pitch in the dying embers of the match – completing a stunning turnaround over the last few months. He has gone from training with the reserves to a member of the first-team squad once again, and all credit to him.
Jose met the media this afternoon, ahead of the aforementioned trip to Goodison Park and during the presser, the gaffer was asked about whether Bastian Schweinsteiger could stay at the Theatre of Dreams beyond January:
“Of course he can. When you have a contract with the club you are the powerful one – you can decide your future.” Jose Mourinho is quoted as saying by Manchester United’s official site.
In the summer we tried to make something happen for Bastian to get a different future, but he was the powerful one and decided to stay, even in difficult circumstances. He worked for that and deserved the happiness of the last match… I like people who are determined.”
It has been a brilliant week for Manchester United, and for Bastian in particular. Like Jose says, the ball is firmly in his court as he has eighteen months left on his current deal, and he doesn’t necessarily have to force a move when the winter window opens.
Who knows, from now until the end of the season anything could happen, and he could force his way into proceedings on a more regular basis. It won’t be easy though, because Paul Pogba and Marouane Fellaini will be back from their suspension on Sunday and I personally expect Schweinsteiger to drop out of the squad completely.
