Jose Mourinho wants to sign Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred as a replacement for Michael Carrick, according to the Daily Record, via The Metro.
Carrick, 36, hasn’t played all that much recently, due to an irregular heart rhythm that was diagnosed earlier in the year. The veteran’s contract also runs out in the summer, and it doesn’t look like any new deal has been placed on the table as of yet.
As for Fred, he’s been playing his football in Ukraine for the last five years, where he has massively impressed, attracting interest from Arsenal, Manchester City and now Manchester United.
It is thought that Mourinho would like this deal done before the January deadline, but as we all know, it’s notoriously tough to bring in new players during the mid-season transfer period.
Marouane Fellaini may need replacing as he’s yet to sign a new deal, too, so at least one defensive-minded midfielder will be an absolute must when the summer rolls around. If Fred can be brought in now, that gives him another six months to bed in which can only be a good thing for all involved.
