Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United will be preparing transfers behind the scenes, and with a move for Victor Lindelof all-but done, that leaves the manager with a defensive decision to make. I personally thought it’d be Phil Jones that would get the boot, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
According to the Daily Star, the Red Devils will sell Chris Smalling this summer, and there are a trio of Premier League sides circling. The report says that Everton, Crystal Palace and West Ham are keen on the 27-year-old Englishman.
Smalling, who was signed back in 2010 has had a hit and miss time at the Theatre of Dreams, and although he has won trophies aplenty, he has struggled over the last twelve months.
The signing of Lindelof now gives us five centre-halves which is probably one too many going into a season, so I would not be surprised to see Smalling leave Old Trafford before the end of the window.
I guess the fact that he is linked with sides like Everton and Palace tells you everything you need to know. He’s a talented player but not at that elite level. Although at times he has been brilliant for us, he has become unreliable and that is something Mourinho simply will not tolerate – hence the move for Lindelof.
