Jose says key Man Utd star has only done enough to be a sub, tells him to improve

Manchester United take on Hull City tonight in the Premier League, and it presents a real opportunity for Jose Mourinho’s side to claw some points back on rivals. Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal all dropped points yesterday evening – so a win here is huge.

Ahead of that game, I’ve personally been wondering whether Anthony Martial deserves to start after getting two assists against Wigan in the FA Cup game, and now Jose Mourinho has given us an answer; as well as some damning words for the talented Frenchman.

Our coach has told Sky Sports News that Martial is good enough to be on the bench, but he still has to perform better to warrant regular starts.

“He has done enough to be on the bench,” Mourinho is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News. “He has to perform better than the others who are competing for the same positions.”

“His position is one where we have lots of options. Do you want me to leave Mkhitaryan out after being man of the match [against Wigan in the FA Cup] and playing so well as he did? I can’t.”

“The players pick themselves. I am just there to analyse what they do and try to be fair with them. Such a good performance, Mkhitaryan has to play [against Hull]. Simple.”

At the end of the day, you have to agree with what Jose is saying. Henrikh Mkhitaryan is playing better than Martial right now, and that’s a fact. The boss isn’t going to change a team that’s playing well, so the 21-year-old forward will just have to be patient and grasp an opportunity when it comes his way.

With that said, the whole situation is surely cause for concern. Martial was, by far and away our best attacking player last year, but he seems to have gotten worse under Jose. It just feels like an all too familiar situation with the Portuguese, who, not so long ago, allowed both Romelu Lukaku and Kevin de Bruyne to leave Chelsea – just look at how both of those guys are performing right now.
