Whether you like the deal or not, Juan Mata has signed a new contract at Manchester United – that could potentially keep him at the club until the summer of 2022.
The attacking midfielder will be 34 if he sees out the full deal, which in itself speaks volumes about how poorly United are operating at the moment. Gone are the days when the Red Devils refused to give nothing more than a one-year deal to players aged 30 and above…
Anyway, shortly after putting pen to paper, Mata took to Twitter to send a classy message to the Old Trafford faithful – expressing his delight at putting pen to paper.
Within that dressing room, I always feel as though Mata ‘gets it’ more than most. As the #8 says, he wants to get United back where they belong.
Now, though, it’s time to prove it where it matters – out on the football field. The fans are growing sick of all the promises made by players via their social media accounts, instead, we need to see the attitude change on the pitch.
Make no mistake about it, Mata could be a key player for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – but only if he’s used correctly. We need to be playing the ex-Chelsea man directly through the middle in the #8 role as he just doesn’t have the pace to play out wide.
Whether that will actually happen remains to be seen, mind…
