Manchester United, as a football club, seems to be trending upwards. The Red Devils have been playing some super stuff under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently, with momentum definitely on their side.

The Baby Faced Assassin deserves credit for turning this United side around. Make no mistake about it, a large part of that was down to Bruno Fernandes. The midfield maestro has been an absolute revelation since making the move to Old Trafford, having already scooped February’s Premier League Player of the Month award.

When a signing is made, it usually means fewer minutes for those players who play in the same position. In this case, the likes of Andreas Pereira and Juan Mata are being used more sparingly.

Fans aren’t too bothered about the lack of Pereira’s presence, though Mata is already developing an on-field relationship with Fernandes. However, the point remains, he needs to be playing more.

Now, the brilliant United star Mata has been urged to leave Old Trafford by former Premier League goalkeeper-turned-pundit, Shaka Hislop.

“I’m going to put him to go and it almost pains me,” Hislop told ESPN FC, transcribed by the Daily Express.

“I think Juan Mata is an outstanding player and under ordinary circumstances you keep Juan Mata regardless.

“The issue then becomes Juan Mata is a bit-part player and I think far too good a player, far too valuable in the dressing room, to be a bit-part player.

“So Juan Mata I think he needs to start thinking about life after Old Trafford.”

As Hislop rightly says, Mata is a fantastic player, though he has to be used correctly and with the right players around him. There’s no doubt that the 31-year-old deserves to be playing week-in-week-out, but right now, United can’t offer him that.

The situation is only going to get worse for the former Chelsea man, too. You’d imagine Angel Gomes’ minutes are going to increase, while talk of acquiring a Jack Grealish or a James Maddison is only intensifying

From his excellent work to Common Goal, to his unwavering loyalty to United, it’s time the Old Trafford club now do their player a favour. Let him leave, have a pick of the clubs and Mata will walk out on a high – which is exactly what he deserves.
