Last night it was widely reported that Japan international Shinji Kagawa would today be jetting into Manchester to undergo his medical ahead of his move to the club. It’s understood that he is only in Manchester to complete his medical, then he intends to go back to his home nation to enjoy his summer break.
Japan based media company Asahi Shimbun have today claimed that Kagawa has revealed to them he is likely to be used behind the striker in a 4-4-1-1 formation, but what would that mean for the club?
First of all it would mean that only one of Danny Welbeck and Wayne Rooney would be starting, which seems strange as towards the back end of last season they had a great understanding of each others game. You’d obviously struggle to leave Rooney out, so what would that mean for Welbeck’s development as a player?
It also means that we are still sticking to our usual two banks of four, however as mentioned here I think variations of the 4-4-2 is a dying art. If this is the case then i’d fully expect us to sign another central midfielder, I still think we need one more to bolster our options in that area. The two signings so far are certainly encouraging, but one more midfielder would definitely boost our chances going into next season.
