Manchester United have been long-term admirers of the young Portugal midfielder William Carvalho. However today, it has emerged they’ll face competition for his signature from fellow Premier League side, and huge rival, Liverpool football club.
Not only that though, Brendan Rodgers’ side are now favourites for the youngsters signature after their second place finish was confirmed at the weekend.
Since David Moyes’ inevitable sacking a few weeks ago, United’s interest in the 21-year old has seemingly cooled. It is understood that the incoming manager, believed to be Louis van Gaal has other midfield targets that include Bayern Munich’s Toni Kroos.
United scouts have often been present when Sporting Lisbson have been playing this season, however at the final home game this weekend no Manchester United staff members were present. A Liverpool scout was there however, and with the added bonus of Champions League football on offer, a move to Merseyside looks likely.
Carvalho has a £37million buyout clause in his current contract, but United and Liverpool value him at under the £30million mark. Liverpool are looking to add bodies because they’ll have more games to play this season, and Manchester United are desperate to improve on that midfield area.
If Louis van Gaal sees Toni Kroos as a realistic target, I’d much prefer us to go all out for him. Whilst a superb talent, Carvalho isn’t proven outside of Portugal, whereas Kroos could come in and put in world-class performances from the outset.
