As we all know, Manchester United splashed the cash to bring in Romelu Lukaku from Everton over the summer. Our new star striker will be tasked with banging in the goals, in the expectation that he’ll be able to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic this season – and beyond.
At times, it always looked like a move to Chelsea would be in the offing for the Belgian striker, but United swooped and eventually got their man. So far, he has scored two excellent goals whilst on tour, and you feel that this is just the start for him.
Now, Lukaku has opened up about the decision-making process that he went through before making the move to the Theatre of Dreams. He has confirmed that his good mate Paul Pogba helped him choose the Red Devils, and he jokingly used to drive him past Old Trafford whenever the pair were down in Manchester together.
“I spoke with Paul a lot, obviously,” ManUtd.com quote our new striker as saying. “We spent our holiday together and he said: ‘What do you want to do?’ I told him that I was thinking a lot about signing for United, something was telling me [to do it].
“I live near Manchester so, when I was coming to the city [centre], I would drive past Old Trafford and ask my mates what they thought. Me and Paul, we’d go to the city to have dinner and he’d drive past Old Trafford on purpose!”
This is just great. Obviously, Pogba is only joking and having a bit of a laugh, but who knew it’d actually work and Lukaku would choose United!
I’m really excited that we have a new, young, superb striker to rely upon. Lukaku has been there and done it in the Premier League, and over the last few seasons, he has been right up there in terms of goals scored in England’s top flight.
Once he gets himself adapted to life playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world, he’s only going to get even better, and we’re lucky to call him our own.
