Manchester United are now just two days away from their first pre-season tour game against the Perth Glory, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continuing to put his players through their paces in training.
However, in today’s session, there were two notable absentees. According to ESPN’s Rob Dawson, both Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial were not in pre-season training. Apparently, United responded by claiming that they’re doing ‘gym work’…
It remains to be seen as to why these guys remained indoors for the open training session in which 12,000 fans were in attendance. There’s been no mention of an injury so far, but I guess we’ll get more information come kick-off time on Saturday.
As anyone who has been following the transfer window will know, Lukaku has continually been linked with a move away from Old Trafford so his exclusion brings more intrigue.
The importance of getting a full pre-season under the belt before a hectic Premier League campaign is vital. It always worries me when players can’t get through these sort of training sessions because once you start the year with even a small injury problem, it’s tough to completely rid of it.
Let’s hope there’s no injury involved and instead it’s just tactical from Solskjaer, as he looks to build up those all-important fitness levels before the serious stuff starts.
