Manchester United are already two midfielders down (Fellaini, Herrera), with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looking to invest in a key area of the field before the 2019/20 campaign begins.
Today, Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri has thrown a new name into the ring.
Palmeri took to Twitter yesterday to claim that United are ‘actively working’ on a deal to sign 24-year-old midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic from Lazio.
Furthermore, the starting price for the Serbian will be €75m (£67m), which could pave the way for Paul Pogba to leave Old Trafford this summer. Apparently, both Juventus and Real Madrid are keen on signing the Frenchman, with the latter currently leading the chase. That could change if Paulo Dybala is offered in any sort of player-plus-cash deal.
United find themselves in a tough situation. The club already need one defensive and one attacking midfielder, but if Pogba leaves, in an ideal world, the club would sign three midfielders during this window. That’s nigh-on impossible, particularly as other areas of the squad still need strengthening.
Milinkovic-Savic’s name was heavily mentioned in the summer of twelve months ago, but at the time, Lazio’s willingness to keep ahold of their star midfielder outweighed United’s desire to sign him. It’ll be interesting to see if a similar scenario plays out this time around…
