At this part in the season, you’re beginning to see things take shape for next summer. Manchester United are continually linked with the same two or three names. We’ve seen a lot of calls for Mario Mandzukic, Jadon Sancho and finally, James Maddison.
The latter is tried and tested in the Premier League – with Maddison having a stellar debut season with Leicester City last term. So-much-so that his stock continues to rise and United could well raid The Foxes for the second season in a row…
We’ve been given some positive transfer news in regards to Maddison, too, and it comes from the Manchester Evening News. They state that United are ‘optimistic’ of signing the star 22-year-old ‘next year’ as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continues his ongoing rebuild.
Furthermore, high-level United sources have told the MEN that 23 is the perfect age for new recruits – with Maddison turning 23 next month. The Reds are also interested in Leicester’s Ben Chilwell, who turns 23 in December.
To add more fuel to the fire, United are ‘further emboldened’ by the fact that Maddison is a United fan, while his good mate Harry Maguire made the move from Leicester to Old Trafford in the summer.
It’s pretty obvious what Solskjaer is trying to build – a young core of talented, preferably British players. Maddison is an elite footballer who’d improve this squad no end. United’s main issue has been carving out chances and the Leicester #10 was the best in the league at that last term.
He’d cost a fair wedge, but United can afford it and this is a signing they’re desperate for. I don’t see this one happening in January, though, so the Reds will likely have to wait until next summer.
