Manchester United have joined in the race to sign Schalke midfielder, Leon Goretzka, reported by the Daily Express.
The German international, aged just 22, is out of contract in the summer and is stalling on signing a new deal with the Bundesliga side.
Jose Mourinho’s chase to acquire the star won’t be an easy one, however, with both Arsenal and Tottenham also in the hunt.
Goretzka will be free to talk to other clubs when January rolls around, and his head may be turned if the right offer comes in. There is still the possibility that he puts pen to paper on a new deal at Schalke though.
From what I’ve seen from Goretzka, he’d be a sublime addition to the United squad. At times, our midfield options have looked depleted due to injury, and we’re going to need a long-term replacement for Michael Carrick at some point.
Outside of Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba, our midfielders just haven’t been performing recently, particularly Ander Herrera whos struggles have been evident over the last couple of months.
Bringing in Goretzka on a free transfer would significantly strengthen Mourinho’s hand, particularly as the modern day game is becoming more and more squad orientated rather than just having a strong starting XI.
