Man United confident they’ll sign world-class 29-year-old defender this summer: report

Manchester United are confident that they’ll sign Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

That’s what The Standard writes in an exclusive, with the North London club preparing to sell the Belgium international following the failure to agree a new contract.

Apparently, the Red Devils are ready to spend in excess of £40million to sign the 29-year-old this summer, and I couldn’t be happier to see United closing in on their man.

Centre-back has been a real problem area for Jose Mourinho this season. Victor Lindelof has struggled, Eric Bailly has been injured, and Phil Jones has been, er… Phil Jones…

Bringing in an experienced centre-half would go an awfully long way to fixing the issues. Alderweireld could come in and command that back four from day one. He won’t be afraid to boss the younger defenders around while getting them organised, and that’s a truly wonderful asset to have.

Then I look at the transfer fee of £40million for a truly world-class, Premier League proven player. Sure, it’s due to the fact that his contract is winding down, but strengthening yourself while weakening a perennial rival makes perfect sense. It’s something that Mourinho seems to enjoy doing, too, following his move for Nemanja Matic last summer…
