For all of their faults over the last half-decade, one position Manchester United have got right is the goalkeeper spot.
David de Gea is the best in the business while Sergio Romero is up there amongst the best back-ups. Dean Henderson is mega-talented, as is Portuguese shot-stopper Joel Pereira…
Speaking of Pereira, United have today confirmed that the 23-year-old will leave the club on loan for the 19/20 season. He’ll head to Hearts for the next nine months.
This will be Pereira’s fifth loan since making the move to Old Trafford, though you’d imagine this move North of the border will probably be the most beneficial for his development.
It’s a tough situation for Pereira. There was one point under Jose Mourinho where it really looked like he’d get his chance to prove himself. Though with the emergence of Henderson coupled with the fact that it looks like De Gea is going nowhere, he’s falling backwards rather than moving forward.
For me, a loan signals a belief at the club that Pereira still has a chance but personally, I just don’t see it. Maybe it would have made sense to sell him permanently, though that’s easier said than done given we don’t know if any concrete offers were made.
