Man United dealt first injury blow on tour during Real Salt Lake game

Manchester United’s pre-season tour continued last night, with a game against Western Conference MLS side, Real Salt Lake. The game was played at altitude in muggy heat, meaning it would have been an extra-tough workout for the Red Devils – but that’s what pre-season tour is all about.

The game was all going swimmingly for Jose Mourinho’s men until the second-half when things got a bit heated. Juan Mata was forced off with an injury due to an awful challenge from Saucedo. According to David McDonnell, the Spaniard headed straight down the tunnel. Although we’re not sure as to the severity of the injury right now.

Shortly after that, Antonio Valencia extracted some revenge for the former Chelsea attacker, by putting in an equally innocuous challenge on the same player. He saw red, but in my opinion, it was a yellow-card tackle and nothing more.

It’s not really something you expect in a pre-season friendly, but tempers certainly did flair. I just hope for Mata’s sake that it isn’t anything serious and it’s more of an impact injury than anything else.

Pre-season is so important in terms of building up your match fitness and getting your body ready for the new season. It’ll be a huge blow if the attacker is out for a prolonged period of time.
