Man United defender deemed surplus to requirements, Portuguese side interested: report

Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian has been deemed surplus to requirements by Jose Mourinho, with the right-back now attracting interest from SL Benfica.

That’s according to The Mirror, per The Metro, with the Red Devils valuing the Italian at £15million; an asking price which has so far put off Napoli and AC Milan.

It seems as though Darmian is going to get his wish, he wants to depart from Old Trafford; although I’m pretty certain he would have much-preferred a move home back to Italy.

This move is somewhat of a shame. Darmian started life at United wonderfully well, but after a good few months, things went rapidly downhill. His confidence took a massive knock, and that never really recovered.

Mourinho certainly trusts the 28-year-old, though, as on the tour he was actually given the captain’s arm-band from time-to-time. Whether that’s a show of faith to try and persuade him to stay I’m not quite sure, but with the current injury crisis that’s decimating our squad, you can see why the self-proclaimed Special One wants to keep him around.

Personally, I’d throw Timothy Fosu-Mensah in the team. He’s maturing nicely, and after an excellent loan spell away at Crystal Palace last season, you feel it’s now his time.
