Man United duo being eyed by FC Barcelona as potential transfer targets: report

FC Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde is weighing up a potential move for both Ander Herrera and Juan Mata, reports Diario Gol, translated by Bleacher Report.

Apparently, the Barca boss is checking out the Manchester United duo as he looks to replace the struggling Andre Gomes. He’s also looking at Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil as a target.

All three of Valverde’s targets are out of contract in the summer, and if no new deals are in place by January, the players will be free to talk to the clubs about the possibility of signing a pre-contract agreement.

To my surprise, Mata has played a crucial role in Manchester United’s start to the season. I fully expected the Spaniard to be one of the first out of the exit door when Jose Mourinho was installed as manager, but he’s been brilliant.

Herrera has been a little less influential at the start of this campaign. The Red Devils have opted for a partnership of Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba where possible. Marouane Fellaini’s stature at the club has grown, too. That has led to the Basque midfielder slipping down the pecking order.

Of course, I’d love for both of them to remain at the club beyond their current deals, and personally, I suspect they will, but if Barcelona’s interest is genuine, it may be tough for them to say no to a return to their homeland.
