Manchester United have apparently found an alternative for Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.
After baulking at the asking price for the aforementioned Serbian, Jose Mourinho has turned his attention to another Serie A midfielder; Lorenzo Pellegrini. That’s according to the Daily Star per The Sun, who says the 22-year-old Roma man is now their main target.
Pellegrini only joined Roma last summer, but after an impressive twelve months, it seems as though he has caught Mourinho’s eye. After already signing Fred, midfield is clearly an area where the self-proclaimed Special One is desperately trying to strengthen.
Although the club have reportedly had scouts watching Milinkovic-Savic, I’m glad that we’re not being held to ransom by Lazio. Their £88million asking price is awfully high for a man who’s still got plenty to learn as a footballer; and obviously, it looks as though Pellegrini is a much cheaper alternative.
With Marouane Fellaini yet to commit to a new deal, Pellegrini would certainly get his opportunities if he did move to Old Trafford, and it would be an astute signing. Once again, it’d signal Mourinho’s intent to build for the future rather than trying to win in the here and now. You certainly get the impression that our gaffer will be around for a fair while yet…
