Manchester United take on Chelsea at Wembley this coming Saturday, with the FA Cup trophy at stake.
Before then, though, ESPN could have hinted at Jose Mourinho’s back two. They say that Phil Jones is in pole position to partner Chris Smalling at the heart of the back four.
As an FA Cup final centre-back pairing, I’d be concerned. You never really know what you’re going to get from them. At times, they can be brilliant together, completely shutting down world-class forwards like Harry Kane. However, other games are going to be a disaster. It’s all down to which Jones and Smalling turn up…
But, when you look at United’s other options, it’s a tough call for the manager. Eric Bailly has been constantly injured this term and that completely rules him out. Victor Lindelof has had some excellent games, but also some awful ones too. I’m all for Smalling starting, but I’m just not completely sold on Jones. I’d probably have given Marcos Rojo the nod.
Now it’s just down to getting the pair mentally ready to go, then it’s down to having a confident start. If the first five or ten minutes go well, I’ll feel much more comfortable throughout the match.
