Man United facing stiff competition to sign superstar lighting up the World Cup

Manchester United are facing stiff competition in the race to sign CSKA Moscow superstar, Aleksandr Golovin.

That’s what the Daily Record says, with Chelsea and Arsenal now joining in the hunt to acquire the brilliant 22-year-old who lit up the World Cup opening game.

Golovin scored a stunning free-kick, while also tacking on two assists for his teammates in Russia’s 5-0 drubbing of Saudi Arabia. Throughout the game, he was a real thorn in their side, causing problems practically every time he touched the ball.

His versatility was evident. Golovin started the game on the left-hand side, but when Alan Dzagoev went off injured, he played through the middle; where he performed even better.

Following the game, Jose Mourinho had some very kind words to say about the young man, which fuelled the fire suggesting that United want to sign him.

With Marouane Fellaini yet to commit to a new Old Trafford contract, United are going to need another new central player. Although Golovin’s World Cup display has probably bumped up his price a little bit, he’d still be an awful lot cheaper than a top-level Premier Leauge player would cost. Overall, this deal makes perfect sense.

You can see Golovin in action this evening, when Russia take on Egypt at 19:00 BST.
