Manchester United Football Club failed with a deadline day attempt to sign Willian from Chelsea, according to the usually reliable IB Times. Jose Mourinho added three players to the squad, but that number four seemed to remain elusive throughout.
Early on deadline day, reports emerged from The Sun suggesting that Mourinho had made a late move to try and land the Brazilian and at that time, a deal always looked unlikely in my opinion.
I just couldn’t see Chelsea selling a second player to a direct rival in the same window – particularly when you factor in that it was so late on and they probably wouldn’t have time to bring in a replacement.
Willian is Premier League proven and has worked with Mourinho previously. The right-winger would have undoubtedly slotted seamlessly into the self-proclaimed Special One’s started eleven but it just wasn’t to be.
What it does tell us is that perhaps the manager isn’t 100% happy with the squad he has at his disposal. However, sometimes, deals just aren’t meant to be for one reason or another and now we’ll have to go with the squad we have until January at the very least. That doesn’t mean to say it isn’t good enough to challenge for a title, though.
