Man United fans left unimpressed after disappointing Dan James display vs Chelsea

Cast your mind back just over a year ago. New signing Dan James was the talk of the town after scoring on debut vs Chelsea. Nowadays, there’s a different feeling around the place towards the young Welshman.

After scoring a few goals in his opening month at United, James’ form at Old Trafford has only trended downwards. Perhaps he’s set the bar too high after some great initial displays. However, the performances since then have certainly left us wanting more…

It’s just felt like speed is his biggest asset. Those rip-snorting shots on goal have been few and far between, while his footballing intelligence just doesn’t seem at the required level right now.

Against Chelsea, he was often doubled up on by Reece James and Cesar Azpilicueta, so he does have my sympathy in that regard. I’d just like to see him utilise the ball better. If he’s not on the counter, James sort of seems like he’s out of ideas and unsure where to pass it. At the highest level, you need to master these basics.

I’ll lay some of the blame at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s doorstep, too. He knew this was going to be a tight-knit affair. This isn’t James’ sort of game at this stage in his career. Why not play someone else? Rather than hanging James out there to dry?

The good news for James is that he’s still young and time is on his side. When everyone is fully fit and back from suspension, they’ll be far less pressure on his shoulders.

I’m still willing to keep the faith in him, though I do understand that some fans have had enough…

We’ve compiled some responses via Twitter to the star’s average game vs Chelsea. It’s fair to say Reds fans were left feeling unimpressed…
