When Brandon Williams started the away game in Astana last month, I don’t think anyone expected this rise to prominence for the young man.
He’s now made three successive away starts in cup competitions and impressed in every single one. What’s most encouraging that he’s improved time-after-time, too, despite a gradual step up in terms of quality of opponent.
Last night, against Chelsea, Williams put in another sensational display. Dealing with Callum Hudson-Odoi for 90 minutes was always going to be a tough assignment, but my the young left-back simply didn’t put a foot wrong.
His timing in the tackle was impeccable, while Williams always tracked back and stuck to his position well. It would have been oh so easy for him to wilt under the pressure, rather, the Englishman rose to the occasion.
The question I’d like to ask is this: Has Williams already stole the starting job off Luke Shaw when the latter eventually returns? I believe so. The academy graduate at least deserves his chance to prove his worth in a Premier League game. At the end of the day, his performances warrant it…
For now, though, I’ll leave you with the best Twitter reactions to the top-drawer outing from the young man. There are some absolute crackers in here, with the 19-year-old getting all the praise that he deserves for a top display vs Chelsea:
