Manchester United Football Club have been built on developing youth. It’s a mantra that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is trying to press on with and tonight against Astana was the perfect example of that.
Although the Red Devils lost the game, there was just as many positives as negatives. Ethan Laird, Dylan Levitt and James Garner all looked right at home – though one player who struggled mightily was Tahith Chong.
The fluffy-haired Dutchman enjoyed an excellent pre-season tour. Many (myself included), thought that this would be the making of the young man. However, since the serious stuff has started, Chong has definitely failed to impress.
What seems glaringly obvious to me is that he looks a little lightweight. Although pretty lean in stature, Chong just doesn’t have the strength to win those physical, one-on-one battles that you just simply have to win in this day and age.
Composure is another key asset and his glaring miss this evening shows he suffers from lapses in concentration. Luke Shaw absolutely put it on a plate for the Dutchman – who blazed home despite the gaping goal.
Although pretty quick and agile, the decision-making is often poor and sometimes the execution is even worse. All-in-all, it was a night to forget. Chong was rightly subbed off before the conclusion of the game, and it’s not a fixture he’ll look back on with fondness.
If I were Chong, I certainly won’t be checking my social media this evening. United fans tore into the 19-year-old on Twitter for his poor display, and with his contract winding down, the attacker needs a miracle to secure himself a new deal.
