Manchester United’s search to sign a new centre-half continues. Several names have been linked this summer, but today, the Portuguese media have mentioned a new face.
It comes from Record’s Thursday print edition, with the excellent translation coming from Sport Witness. They’re claiming that United had scouts at a pre-season game between SL Benfica and Anderlecht on Wednesday – watching the 22-year-old centre-half Ruben Dias.
As Sport Witness state, it feels as though United always have scouts at Benfica games due to their incredible array of talent, but Record adds that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have already started negotiations for Dias.
SW does add a tiny snippet, claiming that Record doesn’t really make it clear whether negotiations are still underway or they’re already finished.
Dias’ stock has risen rather significantly over the last twelve months, as the centre-half continues to shine for both club and country.
Benfica’s budding star is pretty quick, extremely physical and good off either foot. He has the make up of a top centre-half, but the step up in quality to the Premier League is a big leap – just ask Victor Lindelof, who needed a season to settle.
The 22-year-old currently has a €66m (£59.2m) release clause in his contract, but for me, I’d love to see the Reds go after a player with Premier League experience, and preferably someone who can take control and lead the defence, as that’s exactly what United are crying out for at present.
