Man United still haggling over Alex Telles fee, deal could progress quickly: report

The latest left-back linked with a Man United move this summer is FC Porto’s Alex Telles.

It’s a transfer that seems to be moving along pretty steadily. We covered a story earlier in the week from The Guardian, who claimed that the player himself was ‘hopeful’ of a Red Devils transfer being completed this week.

Now, James Ducker, writing in The Telegraph, has had his say. Apparently, Man United and FC Porto are still haggling over a fee for Alex Telles. Truth be told, that pretty much sums up our transfer window…

What’s encouraging, though, is that a deal for United to sign the 27-year-old is likely to progress quickly, if a compromise over the fee can be reached.

According to the report, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants more quality options at full-back. Signing Telles would provide direct competition for Luke Shaw, leaving Brandon Williams to cover at right-back, which is his natural position.

It all comes down to whether United feel Telles is good enough to start week-in-week-out. After all, there’s absolutely zero point in signing a 28-year-old, only for him to sit on the bench.

Telles a panic signing?

It somewhat feels like it. United are struggling to get deals done at this juncture, while Telles doesn’t necessarily fit the mould. Solskjaer has tended to look towards younger players, rather than signing someone who’ll only give two or three years service.

I get the impression United are trying to appease the fans while keeping costs down, by signing someone who’d be relatively cheap in terms of both transfer fee and wages.

Make no mistake, Telles would be a gamble. There’s no guarantee he’s better than the aforementioned Shaw, while United’s luck with South Americans has been pretty horrendous. Who knows, he could surprise us all, but I do get the impression that this transfer rumour has some serious credibility…
