Manchester United have made three high-profile signings thus far this transfer window, spending way in excess of £100million on Victor Lindelof, Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic. However, their spending may not be done if a report from the Daily Express is to be believed.
They cite bookmakers BetStars, who have installed Manchester United as favourites to sign FC Barcelona central midfielder, Andre Gomes.
The news comes just hours after the Red Devils were linked with a potential move to sign the 23-year-old, who isn’t having the best of times at the Camp Nou; despite only being there for twelve months.
Mourinho’s countryman is now 3/1 to join Old Trafford this summer, ahead of rivals Chelsea at 7/1. His former club Valencia are priced at 14/1.
“Jose Mourinho seems to have set his sights on signing fellow countryman Andre Gomes from Barcelona this summer in a bid to bolster his attacking options ahead of the start of the new season,” BetStars Director Ian Marmion said, as per the Express.
“The 23-year-old struggled to make an impact in his debut season at the Nou Camp last term.
“And the Catalans are reportedly willing to let the young midfielder go, which has put the Red Devils on high alert.
“United currently lead the chase to land the Portugal international at 3/1, ahead of rivals Chelsea at 7/1, while Valencia are priced at 14/1 to make a move for their former protege.”
Personally, I like Gomes. He was brilliant for Valencia CF before making the move to Catalonia, and if he could rediscover that form, he’d definitely be a worthwhile signing.
He’s young, versatile and a hard worker, meaning he would be the perfect fit for a team managed by Mourinho. However, you’d imagine that Barca would want to drive the price up pretty significantly, and he’d probably cost a wedge. With that said, Gomes could be the perfect replacement long-term for an ageing Michael Carrick.
