Man United keeping tabs on Douglas Costa, closely following his progress: Sky

Man United interest in Douglas Costa actually dates back at least a couple of years from his time at Bayern Munich. Now, the Red Devils are apparently keen again…

The Brazilian, now 29, plies his trade for Juventus. This term, though, he has been used sparingly by the Old Lady. This summer, he could well be on the move.

Apparently, the Old Trafford club are seemingly keen on Costa. According to Sky Sports News, United are keeping tabs on the star who currently earns £193,000-a-week (Wage Indicator) with the Serie A outfit.

Furthermore, the Reds have been ‘closely following his progress’ this season, as they look to sign a wide player in the ‘coming weeks’.

As expected, Jadon Sancho remains the number one target, though should a deal not come off, Costa is considered as an alternative.

At this juncture, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is targeting squad depth ahead of the 2020/21 term. This starting line-up can compete with pretty much anyone, it’s just that the options from off the substitutes bench aren’t really up to scratch.

Would a Man United move for Douglas Costa add quality?

Definitely. The Brazilian is quick, two-footed and hungry to prove his worth following being used sparingly in Turin. There’s nothing more dangerous than a high-level footballer who has been doubted. Just look at Romelu Lukaku over at Inter Milan…

The question mark over this transfer for me is longevity. Costa would probably start in this team, but only for a season or two… Mason Greenwood is only going to improve and it won’t be too long before he’s considered a more well-rounded player than Costa.

He’d want hefty wages to come here, while Costa doesn’t necessarily fit the player profile of the typical signings Solskjaer has made. He’s shown an obvious preference towards adding young, preferably English players. Why change that mantra now…?
