Manchester United Football Club are in serious need of adding to their playing squad during this January transfer window.
The question is, finding the right player. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has developed a tendency to drift towards preferably younger, preferably British players. I guess that’s why the Bruno Fernandes rumours are somewhat confusing…
Yesterday, though, it seems as though Solskjaer was trending somewhat back towards his norm. The story comes from the usually reliable Duncan Castles in the Daily Record. He writes that United have made an offer that would guarantee £25million for young midfielder, Jude Bellingham.
Bellingham, aged just sixteen, has attracted scouts from all across Europe, with Arsenal understood to be holding a strong interest in securing his services.
Now I’m going to be straight-up with you, I’ve never seen Bellingham play. However, offering £25million for someone who is so young should tell us everything we need to know about his talents.
Usually, when signing young players, the transfer fee tends to be far smaller so there’s no risk involved. Here, United would be taking a massive gamble on a youngster who they can’t guarantee will develop into the world-beater that they obviously hope he is.
Sure, United can afford it, but to me, this seems like a step too far. Bellingham is undoubtedly the talk of the town for Birmingham City right now, but can he take that up a notch at such a young age?
I guess we’ll have to wait and see…
