Man United make Alderweireld their primary backup option to Maguire: report

For Manchester United fans, the Harry Maguire rumours just will not go away. It seems as though the Red Devils will be forced to pay big to land their man, mind.

Well, according to the Telegraph, United’s move for the 26-year-old could accelerate due to an expiring release clause in Toby Aldereweireld’s contract…

Apparently, clubs have until the end of play on Friday to activate a £25m release clause in Alderweireld’s contract. If that doesn’t happen the Belgium international will cost £40million.

Why’s that relevant, you ask? Well, United have made the classy Tottenham Hotspur 30-year-old their primary backup option should a move for Maguire fail – so effectively, the Reds only have a couple of days more to work on a deal for the one they call ‘Slabhead’ before activating Alderweireld’s release clause instead.

United supporters have been firmly on the Alderweireld hype train from day one. They’ve always believed the club should just get on with it and sign the Spurs man because he’s an absolute bargain.

For me, though, Maguire is the better addition purely from a longevity standpoint. You’ll get at least a half-decade out of him, whereas Alderweireld would need replacing in a year or two at most – leaving Solskjaer right back to square one…
