Manchester United have apparently made an approach to sign Lazio defender, Stefan De Vrij, according to Gazzetta Dello Sport, translated by The Metro.
The 25-year-old is currently in his fourth season with the Serie A club, but he’s out of contract next summer, with Jose Mourinho ready to swoop to sign a third centre-back during his tenure as United boss.
Mourinho won’t have it all his own way, however, with Liverpool also keen on signing the Dutchman.
De Vrij will be free to discuss signing a pre-contract in January, with a view to completing a Bosman transfer next summer. Either that, or United could buy him at a discounted price when the winter window opens in just a couple of weeks from now.
It is reported that Lazio are desperate to try and tie De Vrij down to a new deal, including a release clause of £22million so they’ll at least get some sort of transfer fee for him.
I like De Vrij and I think he’s an ideal centre-back for English football. My concern would be that we already have ample options at centre-half, and I’d prefer to see at least one of those sold before United delve into the market in that area.
