Manchester United are interested in signing Sevilla defender Clement Lenglet this summer.
That’s according to French media outlet L’Equipe, translated by Sport Witness. Apparently, Chelsea and FC Barcelona have also shown an interest in the 22-year-old, and Sevilla could be powerless in any potential deal.
That’s because the France U21 international has a £31million (€35m) release clause in his current contract, meaning any club would be free to swoop in; provided they meet the aforementioned figure.
Lenglet has enjoyed an excellent season with the La Liga club, playing 47 times across all competitions; including taking part against the Red Devils as Sevilla dumped Jose Mourinho’s team out of the Champions League at the last sixteen phase.
Personally, I feel United are desperate to bring in a new centre-back this season, and this latest link seems timely, following the news that the Old Trafford club aren’t believed to be in talks with Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld.
I like Lenglet, I think he’d be an astute signing; particularly at the price quoted. However, I’d much prefer to see an experienced defender come in. Time and time again we’ve relied on youngsters who have let us down and made crucial mistakes. Now it’s time to bring a veteran into the mix, who’d be able to calm things down when the going get’s tough.
