Manchester United Football Club have reportedly made an offer for FC Porto midfielder, Afonso Sousa.
That’s according to Portuguese media outlet O Jogo, translated brilliantly by Sport Witness. Apparently, FC Barcelona have also made a bid, although O Jogo don’t know whether those bids have been accepted at this point.
At eighteen, it’s always tough to work out how the player is going to develop. There is significant risk involved in the transfer, as moving to a new league, learning a new system will only add to the difficulties.
With just twelve months left on his current contract, Porto have a decision to make. Do they take the risk and chance losing him on a free next summer? Or do they cash in now while Sousa still has some value.
Midfield is an area where United need to strengthen, but personally, I’d love to see a more experienced player come in. Jose Mourinho needs that first-team regular who’ll be dependable week-in-week-out from the get-go. It’d take Sousa some time to adapt to life in England. After losing the Premier League title by such a big margin just a few months ago, it’s not really a chance that United should be taking.
