Athletic Bilbao want to re-sign Ander Herrera, and the Basque side are prepared to make the Manchester United midfielder their highest paid player.
That’s according to Spanish publication AS, translated by the Daily Mail. The La Liga side showed an interest in moving for Herrera as his Red Devils deal was set to expire this summer; although United have since activated a one-year extension thanks to a clause in his contract. The La Liga side are still interested in signing the 28-year-old.
Herrera has emerged as a real fan favourite at Old Trafford, largely due to his passion, desire and work-rate. Twelve months ago, the midfielder won United’s Player of the Year award, but during the 2017/18 campaign, he saw a large reduction in playing time following Nemanja Matic’s arrival.
At this stage, Herrera probably has one big-money move left in him, and a move back home must certainly be tempting. With that said, he seems to absolutely adore playing for United, and I honestly think that this transfer saga could go either way.
Sure, we’d all like him to stay in Manchester, but after Fred’s arrival, coupled with the fact that Scott McTominay is ever-improving, it looks as though Herrera’s going to find playing time hard to come by. We all know how much he enjoys the challenge, though…
