Earlier today, we covered a story from The Independent in which it was claimed that West Ham United had asked Manchester United for Anthony Martial to be included in any deal for Issa Diop.
Clearly, The Sun don’t see that happening, as they say that the Red Devils have actually offered Phil Jones to The Hammers. The 27-year-old, who only signed a new United deal in January, was offered to West Ham – although that bid was immediately rejected.
Apparently, the London club have no intention of selling Diop, while they also have no interest in taking Phil Jones.
The report from The Sun also claims that Jones faces being ‘frozen out’ at Old Trafford, with Solskjaer willingly sacrificing the England international.
My first reaction is that if he wasn’t part of Solskjaer’s long-term plans then why was Jones given a new contract in January? Again, United are too focused on recouping transfer value back for a bang-average player. Instead, they should just be looking to get him completely off the books.
When Jones first arrived at United I genuinely thought he would be the long-term man to play at centre-half, but year-on-year he has gotten worse, not better. Now he doesn’t fill you with any confidence whatsoever and it’s easy to see why West Ham don’t want him.
I get the feeling that we’ll be stuck with Jones for a while yet – and it’s all the club’s own fault, unfortunately.
