Things had gone relatively quiet in terms of Manchester United’s proposed move for Matthijs de Ligt… The last important story we covered was from Mundo Deportivo, which claimed the Reds had made an ‘important’ offer to the centre-half.
Well last night, the usually reliable Gianluca Di Marzio had his say – and unfortunately, it’s not good news for the Old Trafford faithful.
The Italian journalist claims that Paris Saint-Germain has entered the race to sign the top-class 19-year-old, while jumping ahead of their rivals in the process.
Apparently, De Ligt’s PSG switch is ‘very close’ with Mino Raiola already meeting officials in France as he seemingly looks set to seal the deal.
Di Marzio actually doesn’t name United, although he does state that the only two clubs now in the hunt for De Ligt’s signature are the aforementioned PSG and FC Barcelona.
If we’re being realistic with ourselves De Ligt was never going to choose Old Trafford, was he? A lack of Champions League football was always going to hurt us when it comes to pursuit the premiere prizes on the transfer market.
I guess the good news is that we know the deal is dead early, leaving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer time to concentrate on other centre-half options…
